Dr. Brett McKinnon is a basic and translational research scientist at the University of Queensland. After completing his PhD, Dr McKinnon began studying endometriosis at the University of Bern, Switzerland, working with some of the leading researchers in the field. This work helped establish the molecular basis of endometriosis-associated pain.

On returning to Australia, he established the Endometriosis Research Queensland Study, a comprehensive research program aimed at better understanding the pathogenesis of endometriosis to improve diagnosis and treatment. He is a member of the World Endometriosis Society Mid-Career Board, a former Associate Editor of Human Reproduction, and a current editor for Frontiers in Reproduction . He also serves on several scientific advisory boards and grant review committees.

His group specialises in understanding the molecular variation in endometriosis that may underlie individual differences in disease presentation and treatment response, as well as in the generation of pre-clinical models. These approaches aim to shift the current trial-and-error treatment paradigm from the patient to the laboratory, paving the way for more precise and effective therapies to be delivered to the individual.
