Simple conversation starters to raise awareness about Endometriosis.

As part of our Endometriosis March Awareness Pledge, you’ve committed to starting conversations with three new people about endometriosis—and we’re here to help you get those conversations started!

Endometriosis affects 1 in 7 women and people assigned female at birth, yet many still don’t understand the realities of living with this condition.

Whether it’s with a colleague at work, a family member, or a friend, there are lots of creative and meaningful ways to introduce the topic of endometriosis. 

You can use these conversation starters whether you have been diagnosed with Endometriosis or have a family member or friend that has! Everyone can take our pledge and raise awareness!  

Here are some simple yet impactful conversation starters that you can personalise to make more appropriate for your own situation!  

We hope they can help you raise awareness while connecting with others on a personal level: 

1. Invite a colleague on a lunchtime walk.

Sometimes, the best conversations happen when you’re not face-to-face in a meeting room. Invite a colleague to join you for a walk during lunch. Walking side by side can help ease any awkwardness and allow the conversation to flow more naturally.

How to start the conversation:

“It is Endometriosis Awareness Month, and I have been learning more about endometriosis. It’s such a common condition, yet so many people don’t know much about it. Have you ever heard of it?” 

  • This opens the door for them to ask questions and for you to share insights in a relaxed, informal setting. 
  • This is a great option for both those who have been diagnosed and those who have not. You do not need to disclose any personal medical history at work if you do not wish.  

2. Cook or share a delicious “Alex Crisp Endo-Friendly” recipe with a friend.

Food brings people together, and cooking a meal for a friend is a great way to introduce the topic of how some foods work better for some than others. Sharing an endo-friendly recipe can spark a meaningful conversation. 

How to start the conversation:

“Alex Crisp from MasterChef created some endo-friendly recipes that are good for reducing inflammation.” it’s actually one of the things I’ve learned about while supporting a friend with endometriosis/ learning to support myself with my diagnosis of endometriosis. It’s amazing how food can help manage symptoms.” 

  • From here, you can explain the role that diet plays in managing endometriosis and how small lifestyle changes can make a difference. 
  • This also works for those who have not been diagnosed to support a loved one or to gather loved ones if you would like to share your own diagnosis.  

3. Bring it up when talking about women’s health.

Whether you’re discussing a current news story or health topics in general, this can be a great way to naturally bring up the subject. 

How to start the conversation:

“I’ve been reading a lot about women’s health lately, and I was shocked to learn that endometriosis affects 1 in 9 women. It’s so common, yet it’s something not many people talk about. Have you heard of it?” 

  • This is an easy way to introduce endometriosis, especially when it feels like a natural flow in a health-related conversation. 

4. Share your own story or experience.

Personal stories are powerful. If you’ve been affected by endometriosis, sharing your journey can help raise awareness in a deeply authentic way.

How to start the conversation:

“I’ve been living with endometriosis for a while now, and it’s been such an eye-opening experience. I’ve learned so much about how it affects people in different ways. It’s surprising how few people really understand what it’s like. Have you ever talked to someone with endo before?” 

  • This invites others into your experience and encourages them to ask questions, fostering empathy and understanding. 

5. Use Social Media to Share Information

If you’re active on social media, it’s a great platform to start discussions. Sharing an Endometriosis Australia video or post or you can create your own!  

How to start the conversation:

“I shared a post on social media about endometriosis today. It’s surprising how many people don’t realise how common it is.” 

  • Social media is a powerful tool for education, and sharing content could prompt friends, family, or colleagues to ask questions and learn more. 

6. Suggest a Movie or Documentary on Endometriosis

Watching a documentary or movie that explores the realities of endometriosis can be a fantastic way to initiate deeper conversations. Consider suggesting a screening of something informative with a friend, or even hosting a small watch party. 

How to start the conversation:

“I watched this really eye-opening documentary on endometriosis last night, and it made me realize how much more we need to talk about this condition. Have you ever seen anything on it?” 

  • This could lead to a discussion on the importance of raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding endometriosis. 

Raising awareness about endometriosis doesn’t always have to be a formal conversation—it can be as simple as sharing a story over lunch, recommending a good recipe, or checking in on someone about their health. The more people know about the realities of living with endometriosis, the more compassionate and understanding our communities will become. 

Remember, every conversation counts! Your willingness to talk about endometriosis helps break down the stigma and brings us closer to a world where no one has to suffer in silence.
