ENDOMETRIOSIS AUSTRALIA WELCOMES TASMANIAN GOVERNMENT’S $2 MILLION FUNDING BOOST FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS CARE

Endometriosis Australia welcomes the Tasmanian Government’s announcement of $2 million in funding to improve support for girls and women living with endometriosis across the state.

The announcement by Premier Jeremy Rockliff today outlines a comprehensive package that will expand access to multidisciplinary care, support primary healthcare providers with education and training, and increase community awareness about this debilitating condition that affects 1 in 9 Australian women.

Monica Forlano, Chair of Endometriosis Australia, said, “This funding represents a significant step forward in addressing the needs of approximately 13,000 Tasmanian women and girls living with endometriosis. The focus on reducing diagnostic delays and improving access to specialised care aligns perfectly with our mission to improve the lives of people with endometriosis.”

The funding package includes:

  • Establishment of a dedicated Endometriosis Clinic at the Royal Hobart Hospital
  • Expansion of telehealth services to reach rural and regional patients
  • Professional development for healthcare providers
  • Educational programs for schools
  • Community awareness campaigns

“We are particularly encouraged by the government’s commitment to education and awareness, which is crucial for early intervention. The average 6.5-year delay in diagnosis is unacceptable, and initiatives like this will help reduce this timeframe,” Ms. Forlano added.

Endometriosis Australia has long advocated for integrated care models that address the physical, emotional, and social impacts of endometriosis. The multidisciplinary approach outlined in the Tasmanian plan, which includes pain specialists, gynaecologists, physiotherapists, and mental health professionals, represents best practice in endometriosis care.

“We look forward to working closely with the Tasmanian Government and healthcare providers to ensure the success of these initiatives. This comprehensive approach sets a strong example for other states and territories to follow,” Ms. Forlano said.

Endometriosis Australia continues to call for similar investments nationwide to address the needs of near 1 million Australians living with endometriosis.
