Endometriosis Australia Statement on Patient Concerns and Standards of Care

The recent news has been incredibly distressing for the endometriosis community. We are deeply saddened by the experiences that have been shared and our thoughts are with everyone affected by the situation. We support all patients who have suffered harm, and we recognise how difficult it can be to come forward.

Endometriosis Australia cannot comment on individual clinical matters and is not able to provide legal or complaints advice.

However, for anyone who believes they have experienced medical mistreatment, there are formal avenues available. Patients can raise concerns directly with the healthcare provider or hospital involved, or lodge a complaint with their state or territory Health Care Complaints Commission. Concerns about a registered health practitioner can also be made to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, AHPRA, which works in partnership with the relevant National Board. In some circumstances, individuals may also wish to seek independent legal advice to understand their options. We encourage anyone seeking to make a complaint to contact the appropriate authority for guidance on the correct process.

As an organisation, our focus remains on advocating for the endometriosis community through education, awareness and research. A core part of our mission is improving understanding of the disease, supporting evidence-based care and funding research that leads to earlier diagnosis, better treatment options and improved patient outcomes. We will continue to advocate for higher standards of care, clearer information for patients and a healthcare system that listens to and supports those living with endometriosis.
